Bratislava in a day

"It is boring"
"There's nothing to see there"
"It's like a typical grey Soviet city"
"Bratislava?! But why would you go there?!"

... and similar reactions you get from other people when the talk comes to visiting Bratislava (Hint for dummies; it's the capital of Slovakia. For even more dummies; Czech and Slovakia already separate countries).

What can I say is that all these reactions are overruled and it's a lovely place to visit at least once. Half or one day is enough though. Indeed, nothing much to see if you'll be coming from Prague or Vienna or Budapest (Golden Triangle, by the way!). But it has its own taste. I'd say perfect to stop over for half day express tour on the way to from one of the Golden Triangle to the other.

My flight to Istanbul was from Bratislava. I went there for 2 reasons; cheap flight ticket and to see the city while catching up with Michal, my travel and work buddy in Singapore days. He set up his company in Bratislava and happily "entrepreneuring". He took me around the interesting parts of the city and I tried to grab some cool views of the city. Later on we had good lunch in typical Slovak pub. As we shared many common interests and friends, it was good to catch up and also get some story of his experience in entrepreneurship. He pointed out that having and keeping the useful and talented stuff is the challenge. And that you'd face being broke at the beginning. He still had a wish to do lots of traveling, but this private business thing seems like tied up his hands. A lesson for me; to see as much as I can before diving into this entrepreneurship sea.

Bratislava Castle from the close view. I didn't have time to go and explore inside.

"UFO tower" on the bridge and Danube (Dunai) river. UFO look alike tower has a restaurant and observation deck. On the other side of the river you can see massive number of apartment blocks built in more like Soviet-style.

View of the old part of the city from the castle hill.

Like in Prague, you can see some of these interesting bronze statues.

Statue of Alzbet Durinska, daughter of King Ondrej II and wife of Ludovik Durinsk. She spent her short life in the Bratislava Castle, and after her husband's wife she was forced out of the castle. After her death, she was claimed as martyr.

Some interesting statues of contemporary art being displayed.

A square in Old Town.

Statue called "Paparazzi", right at the entrance of the famous Paparazzi fine-dining restaurant.

Small souvenir and gift boutiques in the central square.

People enjoying free wifi connection in the street.

One of the gates to Old Town.
